Customer Testimonials:

I love this stuff! A little goes a long way and it feels great on my super, super dry skin. After regular use for two weeks, my overly dry skin feels renewed! Now even my boyfriend is hooked on it.
Camille
The yummy smell reminds me of a nice coconut breeze in the tropics. I started using it when I was several months pregnant with my second child. I had really dry and itchy skin from my hands, belly, and feet and regular lotions didn't work. Grace's Body Butter really helped to moisturize those dry areas.
Terri
I use the Body Butter on irritated/rough skin where only petroleum jelly would work before, but this one smells much nicer and is less greasy.
Karen
Grace's Body Butter is my nightly moisturizer. It smells very good and moisturizers my skin to perfection.
Sana
Grace's Homemade Body Butter keeps my hands moisturized much longer than other hand moisturizers. It is amazing!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why use Grace's Homemade products?
    Because our products:
    • Recondition, hydrate, soothe and soften skin and hair using 4-6 natural, plant-based ingredients (except beeswax) that you don't have to look up in an encyclopedia. We do not use artificial ingredients.
    • Are safe for babies and adults alike. Absorb safely into the skin. We use it too!
    • Are free of synthetic fragrances. Scents are added with essential oils.
    • Do not contain water. Water is the most common ingredient in cosmetics, and probably the cheapest. That 6 oz bottle of lotion might have 4 oz of water in it. Water is not absorbed by the skin, so it does not moisturize and could actually dry the skin. Water is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, and preservatives (like alcohols, parabens, EDTA) are required to keep any product with water safe.
    • Do not contain alcohol or parabens. As mentioned above, these are necessary to prevent bacterial growth in the products that contain water. Certain alcohols, like ethyl alcohol, methanol and isopropyl acohol are drying and irritating to the skin and can disrupt the skin's protective barrier. Find out more on our Resources page.
    • Are eco-friendly: product containers are made from food-safe, reusable and recyclable Polypropylene (#5 PP). Glass containers are also available for Custom Orders.
  2. What can I do if products become too soft or too hard?
What's great about our products is that they melt on application to your skin. If they become too soft, place them in a refrigerator for 30 minutes to 2 hours or until it hardens to a texture that you like. If they are too hard for your liking, simply stir them. Then store in a cool place (i.e. your medicine cabinet or next to your bed).

  3. What kind of Shea Butter do you use?
After a few trials we decided to use refined Shea Butter. Unrefined Shea Butter has a rough texture and a shorter shelf life due to impurities, and a distinct nutty, sometimes smoky smell that is not always appreciated by everyone.

  4. What is the shelf life of your products?
Our products are best used within 4-6 months from the shipping date. Grace's Homemade products do not contain water or artificial preservatives. Some ingredients act as natural preservatives.

Our Story

Many years ago my roommate and I stumbled onto the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep® Cosmetics Database (ewg.org/skindeep) while shopping online for less toxic everyday health and skincare products.

We started looking up scores or specific ingredients in our shampoo, facial moisturizers, sunscreen, contact solution, and all the other cosmetic and cleaning products. We were amazed by how toxic many of our beauty products were even if they mentioned words like "Natural," "Paraben Free," "SLS free," etc. To our surprise, it didn't matter if it was a department store brand (i.e. Clinique, Estee Lauder, M.A.C Cosmetics) or a brand that sounded more natural (i.e. Eucerin, Yes to Carrots, BareMinerals, Burt's Bees, Aveeno) or even if the product was advertised as safe to use for babies. Many of them still contained questionable chemicals, preservatives, synthetic fragrances that may be allergenic, immunitoxic, or affect the reproductive system.

This gave me the idea to make my own skin care products, and after many trials and experiments I created something very promising. My husband found that daily application of our homemade body butter provided great relief from skin irritation caused by psoriasis. Then our friend who was pregnant at the time found that the body butter moisturized her growing belly and dry skin much better than regular lotions. Plus, she felt safe using our body butter while being pregnant. Our male friends started replacing their hair products with our hair cream as they found it to be non-toxic and easy to use since they could it rub it on their skin and sleep with it instead of having to wash it off their hands and hair. I quickly discovered more friends and family benefited from our homemade skincare creations.

Grace's Homemade continues to grow out of love and support from my family and friends who encourage me to live a healthy lifestyle and promote health and well-being to our community through my homemade skincare.

What are your SKIN and BODY eating?

You may eat healthy, but does your skin and hair eat healthy too?

Look up your most frequently used health or beauty products to see how they score in the EWG Cosmetics Database (or other resources at your disposal). If your product is not listed, try looking up the individual ingredients (i.e. fragrance, phenoxyethanol, parabens, sulfates) and see how they fare.
